Bontle Ke Tlhago Co-operated Limited is a community-based business focused on resource
recovery in Diepsloot, Johannesburg. As an operational buy-back centre since 2012 and under
a newly formed cooperative of dynamic and diverse leadership, the key focus areas are
reducing waste in the community through clean-up campaigns, and creating employment
through the education of the value of waste as a resource.
Stewarding the importance of a healthy environment and addressing unemployment by actively
supporting waste reclaimers by offering better prices for waste streams. The approach of turning
waste into income, alongside cleaning up the community environment, is centred around
inclusive community participation and partnerships with surrounding businesses and
intervention campaigns.
Depleting natural resources, together with the environmental impacts of waste and the
diminishing capacity of landfills, has prompted the need for reduced waste generation. The
Waste Hierarchy comprises five waste management categories: waste prevention (reduction),
re-use, recycling, energy recovery, and finally disposal, which is applied internationally to reduce
waste ultimately disposed of at landfills.

Thembinkosi has been facilitating events and organising tournaments around the community. He has good communication and leadership skills. He is an enthusiastic and dedicated person who works hard and commits himself.
Nondumiso Sibiya, a dedicated director at Bontle Ke Tlhago since July 2024, brings experience from Boomba.mobi, where she significantly increased revenue. She is committed to uplifting waste pickers and enhancing business operations through data-driven improvements.
Bernad has a Marketing Diploma from Boston Business College and an IT qualification from Wynberg Business College. His artistic mind and passion for the environment are key qualities that have enabled him to play a key role in driving the co-operative from inception.
Elisa has 13 years of experience working in a waste buy-back centre. Her knowledge of the industry is key to setting standards and ensuring efficient operations. She is dedicated to her work and always performs to the best of her ability. She plays a vital role in educating others about the types of waste materials and sorting them accordingly.
